Friday is the 100th Day of School

If you have any questions regarding the 2 projects due on Friday please let me know. The class is very excited about the special day!

Monday we will begin using Volume 2 of our Everyday Math Journal. Your child brought home Volume 1 on Friday. This is yours to keep. We will only have math homework Mon.-Wed. this week so that Thursday night gives time to finish up the 2 projects for Friday.

We will start Unit 10 in SuperKids this week. That will be the last unit in this level.

Wednesday, January 25th begins the Penny Wars to support Make-a-Wish. Information about this has been in the Wednesday packet. Basically, our class wants to bring lots of pennies for our class jar and silver coins to put in other class jars in our building. Pennies count as a positive and silver coins are worth negative points.

Pizza lunch order forms for the pop, chips, and candy went home Friday. Please try to return it Tuesday. Pizza lunch day is Wednesday but the extra day gives me time to get the money and orders organized.

The 100th Day of School will be on January 27th. However, please read the following message from Ms. Iten regarding the 100 Books in 100 Days program.

100 Books in a 100 Days: The last day for 100 Books in a 100 Days (Kindergarten through fifth grade students only) will be Tuesday, February 14th . Students who participated in the program must have their required paperwork turned into their teachers no later than Friday, February 17th.

A letter will be coming Tuesday with your child regarding the activities that they will need help preparing for our special day. We have been talking about it in class at length so they may have already shared the snack and poster board project ideas.

This will be a very exciting week for our class as we prepare to be the readers and gift bearers at the Friday Mass. If your child is a reader, when you are practicing with them at home encourage your child to read slowly. They are going to be nervous on Friday and will read fast. I have scheduled our class to practice in the church Mon.-Thurs. for about 30 minutes each day. The readers will be sitting in the first 4 rows near the tabernacle. Please feel free to sit anywhere behind us to have a great view.

There will be a spelling test on Friday.

Pizza lunch order forms need to be turned in as soon as possible.

Our focus in social studies this week will be Martin Luther King, Jr. Your child will bring home a packet on Friday of completed activities.

A SuperKids progress test will be given Monday. I hope to have them graded and sent home by the end of the week. Tuesday we will begin Units 9-10.

This will be a week of extra fun activities. Tuesday we will watch the 5th graders present a play in Spanish. Thursday afternoon we will practice in the church for the Christmas program. Friday we will do an activity with our 3rd grade book buddies.

As we continue working on Chapter 5 in Math, our focus will be on comparing the value of numbers, place value, and counting money. The fact quizzes will now focus on SUBTRACTION. Begin practicing the subtracting zero and one from a number.

Phonics and Superkids will concentrate on reading words with long vowel sounds. We will be coding words that have "Sneaky e."

The second week of Advent reminds symbolizes hope. In religion we have begun discussing the life of Jesus as he grew up in the Holy Family. There will be a religion test on Wednesday.

We are about to finish units 5 & 6 in Superkids and will take the end of level progress test on Thursday. I will try to have them graded and ready to send home by the following Monday.

Feed the Needy begins Wed. First grade is being asked to donate cans of chicken broth.

As the days get colder, please send your child with appropriate outer wear for outside recess. If the wind chill is above 32 degrees we go outside.

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving holiday. We have now begun the church season of Advent. Each Monday during Advent we will discuss the symbolism of the candle for that week. Your child will bring an activity sheet that we did as part of the lesson.

Tuesday the children will go to the computer lab and with assistance from a Middle School student write a letter to Santa.

Social studies will center around labeling maps with locations such as our city, state, country, the oceans, and continents.

We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Also, the next set of fact quizzes we will begin taking will be adding 2 to a number.

Thank you very much to the parents who went with us to the Veteran's Day parade. The kids had tons of fun and were very well behaved!!

This week we will have Spirit Dress on Wednesday. Please remember to have your child wear tennis shoes as it is a P.E. day.

Thursday we will make a Thanksgiving project with our 7th grade buddies.

Friday is the Appalachia School Mass. Children are encouraged to bring an unwrapped gift to present at the altar.

Wow, can you believe that Halloween is behind us and Thanksgiving is only a few short weeks away?

This week Pizza Lunch day is on Wednesday. Please complete the order form and return it with the money no later than Wednesday morning, though Tuesday is preferred so they can get an accurate count.

Friday we will be going to the Veteran's Day parade in Downtown Tulsa. Our plan is to have a snack after Mass and leave the school by 10:00 a.m. Please send your child with a warm coat and a blanket as it will probably be chilly that morning when we get started.

We will be eating lunch in the classroom after we return from the parade. Please be sure to send your child with a lunch on Friday, as they can not purchase lunch from the cafeteria.

Our Social Studies unit will focus on patriotic symbols and the importance of Veteran's Day.

We will complete our SuperKids book for Unit's 3 & 4 on Tuesday and take the progress test on Wednesday.

We have begun studying the sacraments in religion. We will focus this week on baptism. Your child is welcome to bring a picture from their special day to share with the class.

We took the SuperKids end of Levels 1 & 2 test on Thursday. The graded test will be in your child's red home folder on Tuesday. SuperKids Levels 3 & 4 begin this week and we will also begin our new Phonics workbook.

Please practice the doubles flashcards with your child.

We will be sequencing sentence strips this week to make a scarecrow book. On Friday we will measure various lengths on a scarecrow using candy corn.

The new handwriting unit will focus on individual letter strokes and words beginning with the daily letter.

Each family is encouraged to bring one box of cereal this week to support the National Foodbank.

Mrs. Williams has begun the BoxTop Pumpkin contest. For every 10 BoxTops turned in your child gets a pumpkin to place on a classroom door. Please send the BoxTops in a bag labeled with your child's name, our class, and the number of BoxTops.

I can't believe we are in the last month of school. As you look ahead to summer I would like to encourage you take a trip to either Mardel's or the Apple Tree and purchase the Bridge To Summer Learning--Grade 2 for your child to keep their skills sharp over the summer. Each lessons takes less than 15 minutes but we help your child be ahead of the game when school resumes in August.

Tuesday at 9:00 in the gym is the 100 Books, 100 Days assembly.

Thursday is the 4th grade Bake Sale. We will go as a class during the day. I would appreciate if your child brought less than $2.00.
Thursday we will celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

The religion unit this week will cover the Diocesean Self-Safety Study. The first grade topics that will be dicussed and covered include parts of the body that are private, parts of the body covered by a swimsuit, safe vs. unsafe touches, kind vs. hurtful words, how boys and girls are alike and different, and 3 people other than a parent or family member they can trust. By the end of the week your child will bring home a booklet to share of the things they wrote/drew for each topic. Please keep in mind that for a first grader their answers are very simple and not as deep as we may expect. In the area of safe vs. unsafe touches we will discuss hugs vs. hitting, holding hands vs. pinching, during kind and hurtful words we will focus on words like please vs. give me, no thank you vs. no, in how boys and girls are alike and different the focus will be on long vs. short hair, good at dance vs. good at hockey etc. If you want to discuss things in more detail with your child after you get the booklet that is left to each family.

Report cards will be sent home on Wednesday.

Stations of the Cross will be in the church Wednesday at 2:00.

Friday all students in Kind-3rd grade will have their hearing tested. This is being provided free of charge to all families.

This week we will be focusing on George Washington as part of a combined social studies and language arts unit. We will read books, make a mobile, color his silhouette, and write a short paper about interesting facts from his life. This will be our first time to use the writing process techniques of brainstorming, writing a rough draft, editing, and writing a final copy.

Mass will be on Friday this week.

Thank you to Lucy's family for donating stickers and band aids to our classroom.

The classroom supply of glue sticks is running VERY LOW! The next time you are in a store please pick up your child 4-6 glue sticks for the remainder of the year. One glue stick usually does not last your child more than 2 weeks. If you have a bottle of white glue leftover from last year they can bring that also (but please send a few glue sticks as the bottle of glue takes so long to dry and doesn't work to good for the SuperKids activities).

Mrs. Williams is still having her snowball contest. So far our class has only earned two snowballs so look for Box Tops. 10box tops=1 snowball.

WEDNESDAY IS THE 100TH DAY OF SCHOOL!!

Students need to wear their 100th Day shirt over their school uniform. We have P.E. on Wednesday so they will be taking their shirts off during that time and need to have a uniform shirt underneath.

Wednesday is Pizza Lunch Day. Order forms for chips, drinks, and candy will be coming home Monday in the red folder.

During Catholic Schools Week they will be having a penny contest to benefit the Blue Star Moms. The collection will being this week and end next Wednesday. The class that brings in the most pennies will earn a free dress and every student who donates pennies will earn a PJ day on February 2nd. So, start searching for those pennies.

Monday the students will be taking the Unit 5 progress test in Math and completing the last page in Volume 1 of the Math Journal. The completed journal can be kept at home. Tuesday we will begin using Volume 2.

By the end of the week we will complete the first Level of SuperKids. The class will spend 2 days taking an end of level test. I will go over the results at parent/teacher conferences.

The class had a wonderful week back together. It was obvious they really missed their friends over the break.

I introduced to the class how to write a morning message. This will take the place of the morning worksheet that had been on their desk each day. If your child is tardy after 8:20 they will need to write the message for homework as the board will be erased to begin our math lesson.

Students are beginning to work in their SRA folders. I have started your child in a level that is closest to their reading ability. They will independently work on SRA cards when they complete their assignments. Each color has 12 cards to complete before beginning a new level.

A letter will be sent home Monday about our 100th Day of School t-shirt project.

These 3 days we will spend getting back into our classroom routine. The carpets were cleaned over the break. Therefore, the desks have been rearranged. I tried to put everyone either at a new spot at the table they were at or at a new table.

On the school website it has that our class will be doing Mass on Friday. That date is incorrect. We will be doing the Mass on January 21st and everyone will be assigned a part next week.

The kids are very excited about the fun activities for the week. I am sure your family has a lot of activities going on and so much to keep organized. Below you will find the events for each day this week and things your child may need to bring.

Thank you to the families who have donated to our class auction project. We really want to have a super game basket. If you have donated yet please try to send either a game or monetary donation very soon.

We will have Mass at 8:30 on Wednesday this week.

The class made wonderful lunch sacks for Meals on Wheels last week. I delivered the bags Friday after school and the volunteers were very appreciative. This week the children will be using pipe cleaners and beads to make Christmas ornaments for Franciscan Villa.

As we look forward to our Christmas party on December 17th I have had a few questions regarding students giving a small gift to their 7th grade buddy. We do not do a formal gift exchange between the classes. However, in class this week we will begin making our buddies a Christmas card. If your child would like to bring a candy bar to put inside the card the 7th graders would enjoy a sweet treat.

There will be no math homework Wednesday night but there will be a religion page to complete in the Resource book.

I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving break.

As we begin the season of Advent our class will be doing several service projects in the next few weeks. We will be making Christmas ornaments and holiday place mats for the nursing home, decorating sacks for Meals on Wheels for their "Blizzard" days, making Advent wreaths, and making prayer cards for the RCIA candidates.

In class the students will be given prayer partners throughout the Advent season. Your child will bring home an index card with a classmates name. I am encouraging your family to include the friend in their nightly prayers. Students will not be telling one another who they are praying for each night. We have 15 students in our class and 15 days of school before Christmas break. Please make sure your child returns their prayer partner card daily so everyone can draw a new name each day.

WEDNESDAY IS SPIRIT DRESS! Spirit night will be at Cici's Pizza. Families who attend will be given a free dress day. Mrs. Haws and Mrs. Hern hope to see a lot of our students at Spirit Night.

Thursday will be a Mass day in honor of Veteran's Day.

This week in religion we will continue discussing the sacraments with our primary focus on Baptism. I would like to encourage any child who has received the Sacrament to bring either a picture, Baptismal candle, or a special memento to share with the class. We will be sharing these during religion on Friday and going to the church to view the Baptismal Font.

We are beginning Units 5-6 in Super Kids this week. Unit 5 emphasizes the -ed and -ing ending on words.

Monday will be day 60 of school. Remember the 100 Books program will end in just 40 more school days. Congratulations to the students who have already completed 100 books and are working towards reaching 200!

It's going to be a week of Halloween fun!

We will be having our project with 7th grade buddies on Thursday morning.

The kids will be writing "Scaredy Cat" poems, making a black cat, and writing spelling words on ghostly paper.

Wednesday will be the Math Assessment over Unit 3. The test will cover topics such as telling time to the hour and half hour, drawing a pattern, counting money, and counting by 5's. Graded tests will be sent home by Friday.

I would like to encourage your child to study a little bit extra for the practice spelling test on Wednesday. There is going to be a special treat for anyone who makes an S+.

Tuesday begins the 100 Books in 100 Days reading program. I briefly explained the details at back to school night. Your child will bring home a reading log in their red home folder. I hope your child enjoyed the first few days of school. We spent a lot of time going over procedures and trying to establish routines. This week our focus will be reinforcing procedures and routines.

Monday we will begin our regular routine and school work. We will start our new Everyday Math Program, begin the Welcome Back SuperKids phonics/reading program, and begin a social studies unit.

Your child will be bringing home an assignment sheet in their red home folder on Monday. It lists the homework for each night. Please leave this sheet in the folder. Homework needs to be completed each night and returned in the red folder. Also, the calendar in the folder needs a parent signature/initials nightly. Details about homework, behavior chart, and calendar will discussed at back to school night.

I will have the homework also listed on this blog each week so you can check the homework for the week. I try to update the blog no later than Sunday evening of each week. As soon as it is updated I will send an email to each family.

Thursday is our field trip to Woolaroc Museum in Bartlesville. We will leave the school around 9:00(RAIN OR SHINE) and return by 2:00. It is a Spirit Dress Day. Students need to bring their lunch with a drink and a water bottle. Each driver will bring a cooler to keep the lunches and drinks cold. If your child normally rides in a booster seat please bring it to the classroom Thursday morning.

I would like each child to have their backpack filled with the following items to take on the field trip: a change of clothes, book to read, coloring books and crayons, and a few healthy snack items. Please do not have your child bring any electronic items. I would just like each child to have a few things to keep them entertained while in the car.

Friday is Shakespeare in the Park. The cafeteria is closed. Students must bring their lunch and a blanket/towel to sit on during the picnic lunch.

It's A Fiesta

We will be having a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta on Wednesday at 1:30. Many thanks to Mrs. Fortanel who is graciously preparing all the food, buying pinatas, and authentic candy. Thank you to Mrs. Determan and Mrs. Smith for the paper goods, drinks, and the help planning such a fun event.

In preparation for our Fiesta, we will be learning about the history of the holiday, reading pictures books, making decorations, and a tissue paper flag of Mexico.

Please remember in your prayers the spouse of Mrs. Clark who works in the Language Lab. Many teachers are attending the funeral Monday. Mrs. Hern and myself will be watching both kindergarten classes from 9:45-11:30. All 4 classes will be in Mrs. Haws room watching a movie. We may not cover as much instructional material as I have planned as our routine will be different.

I only have received 7 permission slips for the field trip. They are due by Wednesday.

Go Green! Celebrate Earth Day!

Each day this week will have an activity to prepare for Earth Day on Thursday.

It is a full week of special activities for the kids. We will practice in the church Monday-Wednesday for our Mass Day. Mass is at 8:30 on Thursday.

Tuesday is Picture Day as an Athletic Association Fundraiser. Students may wear free dress and their picture will be taken in the morning. Remember the girls may not wear sandals.

Wednesday is Pizza Lunch Day. Please send the money or envelope with the pop, chip, and candy sheet completed.

Thursday is Spirit Dress and our Mass Day.

Friday is Free Dress for families who make a donation to the Memorial Run. Please send the money in an envelope with the families last name on the front so we can keep track of who should be in free dress. Holy Thursday will spent mostly as a day of religious activities. Our first activity of the day will be to dye Easter eggs with our 7th grade buddies. Please have your child bring a basket with some Easter grass so the hard boiled eggs will not break on the way home. We will be going to Shadow Stations of the Cross at 2:00 in the gym.

The spelling test will only have 6 words this week.

A new set of yellow flashcards will come home on Tuesday.

I hope everyone enjoyed their Spring Break with such a variety of weather. We will only have one full week of school before we have Holy Week. As part of our handwriting activity until then we will be writing and making a book about the important parts of the church. Each day your child will copy a few sentences and color the picture. The completed book will be sent home by Holy Thursday.

In science will be finishing our Little Bits unit sponsored by OERB. By Friday your child will bring home a folder of activities we have completed including freebies such as a poster, pencil, and Petro Pete Book.

Wednesday is the end of the 3rd nine weeks. Report cards will go home next week. As we enter the last nine weeks of school it would really help your child to have them practice one set of flashcards each day and to read aloud for 10 minutes. I realize it becomes more of a challenge to get it done as spring fever will set in but at the same time we don't want those valuable skills to become weak. If your child is not or has not been bringing home blue flashcards let me know and I can make sure they get in the red folder.

Change in Homework Policy--As I look ahead to this wonderful group of kids becoming second graders I am going to have them assume more responsibility for turning in homework. Beginning Thursday, all homework not turned in first thing in the morning will result in your child turning their card to yellow. They may not earn a yellow card back for homework that is not turned when they arrive. However, the homework needs to be turned in the next day or a yellow card will occur again. I realize sometimes things get hectic at night but I want the children to be responsible for making sure it gets completed, signed, and they put it back in the red folder and bring it to school. Also, as gut wrenching as it may be as a parent please do not "rescue" your child and bring forgotten homework to school. If you have questions please feel free to send an email.

Monday is our field trip to BKHS to see a Mother Goose play. I think they are more excited about the bus ride than the actual play.

This week we will spend a large part of each afternoon on a science program sponsored by OERB(Oklahoma Energy Resources Board). I attended a workshop in the fall and will teach the program titled Little Bits. We will understand why people came to Oklahoma during the oil boom, understand the importance of oilfield equipment, recognize the difference between renewable and non-renewable sources of energy, and how many different products come from oil. Your child will bring home coloring sheets, folders, posters, pencils, buttons, and other items associated with the program throughout the week.

We will have our handwriting and Language Arts this week focus around Abraham Lincoln. Students will be learning the steps to writing a simple paragraph. In class we will write a rough draft, edit, and write a final copy of their paragraph about Lincoln.

Congratulations to our class for winning the Penny Wars for our Building! Our prize will be a free dress day. Once I get approval for the date I will let everyone know. Thank you to everyone who brought in so many pennies to benefit Catholic Charities.

Tuesday is Class Picture Day. The picture will be of both first grade classes together. Orders and money are due tomorrow---wear uniforms.

Catholic Schools Week

We will be having a week of fun activities to celebrate Catholic Schools Week!

Tuesday is the Talent Show. The entire first grade will be performing shortly after the show begins at 8:30. It is a Spirit Dress day but I encourage students to add something Western to the outfit for the Talent Show. For example, a cowboy hat, boots, bandanna, or the girls can wear their hair in braids. The classes have been practicing very hard and are excited to show off their talent!

In the afternoon the children will enjoy Jupiter Jumps in the gym.

Wednesday is PJ'S for pennies. If you bring in pennies for the Penny Contest you may wear your PJ's to school.

Thursday is Family Lunch Day from 11:30-12:30. If you ordered Pizzas don't forget to bring plates and drinks. The teacher's classroom that you will be eating in will provide dessert for your family. The Faculty vs. 8th Grade Volleyball game will be in the afternoon.

Friday is crazy hat day! In the afternoon the first grade classes will be watching a Veggie Tales movie.

Tuesday is Spirit Dress!

Wednesday is the 100th Day of School. Wear those special shirts over school uniforms.

Parent/teacher conferences are Thursday after school and Friday morning. If anyone still needs to switch days or times send me an email.

The family lunch day order forms and money need to be turned in if you are purchasing a pizza for Catholic Schools Week.

Talent Show practice will be after morning prayer each day.

The class supply of glue sticks has been used. It would be wonderful if each child could bring 6 glue sticks which should last for the remainder of the year. We could also use Clorox wipes and baby wipes. Clorox wipes are used to clean desks daily and baby wipes to wash hands after outside recess as we head to the cafeteria for lunch.

Wednesday is the end of the 1st semester. Reports card will not be sent home until January 20th.

The students began working in the SRA reading folders last week. They seemed to enjoy the new program.

We will begin to phase out the morning activity in the form of a worksheet. I will begin working with the class on the procedure for copying a pre-printed Morning Message. Students will copy the message from the board into their spirals. Each message will relate to the SuperKids reading/phonics program and will only be 2-3 sentences each day. However, the message will be erased by 8:25 each morning which means they will no longer be able to finish the morning activity later in the day. Students who arrive later than this time will be excused from the assignment for that day. Parents will be able to see the progress at parent/teacher conferences.

I am sad to announce that Anna will no longer be in our class. She will begin at a new school on Monday. Please keep her family in your prayers during this time of transition.

This is a big week for our class. The students will be participating in Friday's Mass. We will practice each day in the church for about 30 minutes to help get prepared. Everyone is welcome at Mass on Friday at 8:30.

Students will begin getting their SRA folders setup this week. This program will continue for the remainder of the year and is a good way to improve their reading skills. I will share their progress with parents at conferences.

This is going to a fun and very exciting week of Holiday Projects. Most important is the class party on Friday at 1:30. Parents are welcome to attend!

Tuesday we are going to be decorating Christmas ornaments to give to our 7th grade buddies.

Wednesday is the dress rehearsal for the Christmas Program.

Thursday is a free dress day if you bring a canned food item. Your child will be bringing home 2 Christmas presents for mom and dad that they have been working on for several weeks. Christmas program is at 6:30 in the gym.

I hope each family enjoyed their time together over Thanksgiving Break!

Thank you to everyone for the wonderful birthday celebration. The cards made by your children were precious. Thank you to Mrs. Determan, Mrs. Schoeling, and Mrs. Smith for the duty free lunch, beautiful flowers, delicious lunch and cookie cake.

This week we will begin decorating our class gingerbread house. We will start Thursday afternoon and hope to have it finished the beginning of the following week. It will be on display until the class Christmas party. I will draw one students name at the party and their family gets to keep the house. This week on Thursday each child will be making 2 Christmas trees using ice cream cones. One tree will be for the house and one they will get to bring home on Friday. Friday we will begin decorating the roof with gumdrops, the back of the house with sticks of gum, and the sides with peppermints and M&M's. If your child comes home a little messy the icing does wash out of the clothes with cold water.

Students will receive a new set of green flashcards on Wednesday.

Our religion focus will be on Advent.

Thursday is a free dress day if your family brings either laundry detergent or a can of coffee.

EXCITING NEWS: The long awaited wondering by the students if they will ever switch seats has happened. I have moved each child's desk to a new spot. Some students have switched tables and some switched locations at their table. However, each child will be sitting at a table with at least one different person.

We will begin our math activities this week learning how to add one to a number. Students will be answering their second set of flashcards and will bring them home Monday night to begin practicing. At the end of the week students will be using balance scales to weigh objects.

Monday is Columbus Day. We will spend the week focusing on Christopher Columbus in social studies. We will end the week with a Scholastic Newspaper about Columbus.

Each child needs to bring magazine pictures of activities that are done in the morning, afternoon, evening and night. Students will be working with partners Thursday to make a time of day poster using the magazine pictures. It would make the project move smoothly if your child could bring 2 pictures for each of the times of day.

Spelling Test Thursday.

We will be discussing the different seasons in the church year this week. We will be finishing Unit 1 in our SuperKids book on Thursday.

The Wednesday packet discussed the Tulsa Run. I would like to encourage your family to participate in this fun event. I will be there myself doing the 1 mile fun run and would like to have as many students from the class join me. This would be a great community building activity for our class and families to get to know each other better. There are lots of goodies and treats for the participants at the end of the race. Forms are to be turned in to Mrs. Williams.

Sunday is Johnny Appleseed's birthday! We will be focusing on his legend throughout the week. Your child will be writing a short paper about his life, reading several stories, creating a bag puppet, and watching a short video.

Thursday our math lesson will be apple taste testing and graphing. Students will try a slice of 3 colors of apples, vote for their favorite, and create a bar graph showing the votes for our class.

Wednesday's math lesson will include our first set of flashcards. Students will be bringing home a bag of tan flashcards to practice each night. THE FLASHCARDS NEED TO BE IN THE RED HOME FOLDER EVERYDAY. WE WILL USE THEM DURING CLASS TIME.

Mass will be on Wednesday this week.

Spirit Week

I enjoyed visiting with all the parents at conferences. If you have thought of any further questions since we met just sent an email.

We have a lot of fun extra activities this week.

Wednesday is Pizza Lunch Day. Your child will bring home a sheet Monday to help them choose their pop, chips, and candy. Please complete the form and return the money by Wednesday. The families who already returned the money I have it in a locked cabinet.

Thursday is Spirit Dress. Students wear a St. Pius shirt with jeans or short. Shorts must be uniform length. See the handbook for further details. Spirit Night is from 6:00-8:00.

Thursday the class will be watching a play brought to us by the Windy City players. They will perform Emperors New Clothes.

Friday is our first spelling test.

Helping Hands

This week begins our first social studies about Community Helpers. We will be identifying people who use their "helping hands" to make our community a safe place to live.

The 8th grade pizza lunch forms are due by Thursday.

Mass is on Wednesday this week.

Thursday will be our first Show 'n Tell. The theme will be summer. Bring a picture or souvenir from a summer activity or vacation.

Parent/Teacher conferences are Thursday after school and Friday. No school Friday.

Teddy Bears

This week we will finish our language arts and science focus on bears. Your child may bring their favorite teddy bear to school on Friday.

SuperKids is off to a great start. Thank you for reading the first story with your child and helping them return their book to school. They will bring the book home Tuesday and Thursday this week.

I was overzealous in my lesson plans last week. We spent a lot of time on science so this week we will do our language arts activities with Corduroy.

Tuesday is picture day--wear uniforms and bring order forms.

The 100 Books in 100 Days will begin Tuesday. A reading log will be in your child's red home folder. Please keep it in the folder. For every 20 books read they will get a can of pop of their choice to enjoy at lunch.

Ms. Iten, the librarian, wants library books returned weekly. Our book check out day is on Fridays.

Friday we will be doing a math graph using gummy bears. I would appreciate any donations of gummy bears for this fun activity.

Welcome Back SuperKids!!

The SuperKids reading materials arrived on Thursday. We will begin Monday working our way through 15 lessons reviewing skills taught in Kindergarten. Each week your child will be bringing home one or two stories from the book to read aloud. Please keep the stories at home and practice as much as need to reach fluency. Continue to listen to your child read aloud in the practice readers. When they can read the book smoothly return it for a new book.

Our science and language arts will focus on animals. We will use our science book for the first time this week. Our language arts activities will center around the books Corduroy and A Pocket for Corduroy.

In religion we are working on Chapter 2 focusing on the Blessed Trinity. Please practice with your child the correct way to make The Sign of the Cross.

Super Second Week

We are ready to start the second week of school. Last week went wonderful as we settled into our daily routine. We began our math, religion, and handwriting programs. We are reviewing letter sounds while we wait for our SuperKids reading materials to arrive. The students worked very hard on their All About Me books. I hope you enjoyed the finished masterpiece.

We will begin our science unit on animals. Our primary focus this week will be on bears and their habitat. We will discuss the key term hibernation. We will be reading one of my favorite books Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See on Wednesday.

Students will have math homework and reading word cards Monday-Thursday. Please try to keep the word cards in your child's red home folder.

Friday is DEAR Time (Drop Everything And Read) from 2:25-2:45. Children are welcome to bring a special book from home.

We had a wonderful first two days of school. The children have prepared several things that will be on display at Back to School night. I hope each family will be able to attend. You can come to either session as I will present the same information at both.

It is still very hot. It is a good idea to send a water bottle with your child each day.

I received such a wonderful surprise Friday afternoon. The class signed a beautiful card and had a very generous gift card inside. Thank you to the parents for such a thoughtful gift. Each child is very special to me and has made this year outstanding.

This week we will be reading books by Arnold Lobel. He is famous for his Frog and Toad book series. Check around your house you may have a book to share with your child in the evening.

Field Trip permission slips need to be signed and returned by tomorrow. We already have enough parent volunteers that I will be able to have one adult for every 3-4 kids. If you have a zoo friends membership and are going with us please let me know.

May Flowers

April showers brings May flowers is not applying very well lately. We have had a lot of very rainy days. Please send your child with a hooded jacket and an umbrella. We move around campus several times a day and they get very wet. Your child is welcome to just leave an umbrealla in the room until the end of the year.

Tuesday is the 100 books in 100 days pizza lunch. Mr. Vereecke has extended the lunch to include ALL STUDENTS even those who did get to 100 books. They will get 2 slices of pizza and a drink.

Friday is Shakespeare in the Park. Students can bring a lunch or buy if you preorder by emailing Alisa Gunch in the office. Your child needs to either bring a blanket or a lawn chair to sit in while eating and watching the performances. Parents are welcome.

We will be taking our end of the year field trip on May 19th to the Tulsa Zoo. The admission is free to students and half price for adult chaperones. We hope you can attend. I think we will probably leave school around 9:30 and be back at the school no later than 2:00.

This week we are going to cover the "Bee" unit. Our phonics program will be centered around the story "Busy Buzzing Bees". We will be writing a fact book about bee's, which you child will be bringing home by Friday, with nobody getting stung . . . hopefully!

Tuesday is a free dress day if you bring a bottle of vitamins. One bottle of vitamins per family qualifies all of your children for the free dress. The vitamins are going to charity.

Thursday we will have two 8th graders helping in our classroom as part of the "Teacher for the Day" program.

Progress Report Week

A progress report will be mailed to your house on Wednesday. Please sign and return it with your child by April 30th.

Wednesday is Pizza Lunch Day. A form was sent home on Monday to help your child with their pop, chips, and candy choices. CANDY NOW COSTS $.75.

A new set of gray(ish) flashcards will come home Wednesday.

The students will be taking a reading assessment this week. It will test on the skills we have been using this year. The test areas will be decoding, vocabulary, research skills, comprehension, and language. Once they are graded I will send each parent a copy of the test results.

Springtime

I hope everyone had a blessed Easter.

This will be a busy time of year as we have many things still to cover before the end of the year. I encourage you to talk to your child about making sure they still work hard and try their best. I begin to see lots of careless mistakes this time of year from the kids trying to hurry and finish an assignment.

We will spend this week in Religion discussing Pentecost. The children will begin writing a book about the different holy objects in the church. It will be not be finished and assembled until next week.

Science will focus on the properties of matter for the next several weeks. Students will begin using a science workbook.

Holy Week

This week we will be on a little bit of a different schedule due to some of our Holy Week activities. Mass will be on Wednesday. Thursday we will watch the 4th grade Lenten play at 9:00 and go to the 8th grades presentation of the Shadow Stations at 2:00.

Thank you to all the parents who volunteered to hard boil eggs for our Thursday project. Please send them with your child that morning. All children need to bring their Easter basket with some grass. They will bring lots of treats at the end of the day.

We will be dyeing the eggs after the Lenten play. I am hoping to begin by 9:30. Any parents who would like to join us for the activity would be greatly appreciated.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

This week we will be learning about the history of the holiday of St. Patrick's. We will locate Ireland on a map, discuss customs related to the holiday, custom of wearing green, and about those wee little leprechauns.

Students will be writing their own story about a leprechaun. They will write a rough draft, edit, and write a final copy. They will bring their finished masterpiece home by Thursday.

Wednesday the middle school service class is sponsoring the Lenten Crusade. Bring a canned meat item and enjoy a free dress day.

Welcome to March

I can't believe how fast the school has gone. It doesn't seem like it should already be March. The class has made wonderful progress in all areas. Last week we began using our new phonics practice reader and began reading in our fourth basal reader. In this reader I will really focus on fluency and comprehension. We will be taking some comprehension tests over various stories.

Math will focus this week on the math facts that have a sum of ten. The set of flashcards will have a very unique style. On each card it will have a number missing in the equation and your child must identify the misssing number.

Sunday is Father Mike's birthday. We will be presenting him with cards and a goodie basket at the Friday school Mass. I would like each child to contribute on individually wrapped snack to include. Ideas such as gum, cookies, chips, nuts, rice krispy treat etc... Please send it by Thursday.

Second through eighth grade will be taking the Iowa Test of Basic Skills this week.
