Week of Mar. 23rd

Spring Has Sprung!

Thank you for all of the donations to our 1st grade auction basket!

Friday is Spirit Dress.

The 1st grade book report projects are on display this week now that the book fair is over.  Parents are welcome to come in before or after school to see the amazing pizza boxes.

Before Spring Break we learned about the States of Matter.  Our final activity was to change a liquid to a solid.  We enjoyed our popsicle experiment and had a first classmate reach 90 Books on the Reading Log!

Key Concepts for the Week:

Religion: We are going to read about and act out the events of Palm Sunday, learn about Jesus teaching in the temple, create an Alleluia garden, and attend Mass on Wednesday.  The children will go to Stations of the Cross on Friday afternoon.

Language Arts--This is our last unit in the 3rd book of our Reading Street Series.  The key concepts for the week are comparative endings and the use of contractions.  The children will have a decodable book for homework on Wednesday night.  The story this week is a play which we will be acting out the following week.

Handwriting--Spelling words will be sent home on Monday. A practice spelling test will be given on Wednesday.   The spelling test is on Friday.

Math--We are beginning Chapter 12 which focuses on subtraction.  This week the children will be finding 10 less, subtracting 10 less, finding the relationships between addition and subtraction, and subtracting multiples of 10.

Science--This week we will be learning about weather and the water cycle.  Children will be having an outside lesson to create a weather report, learn the water cycle, do an experiment, and make a collaborative poster with Mrs. Hern's class.

Week of Mar. 9th

Reading with our Stuffy Day was so much fun!!

The book fair is open until Thursday afternoon.   Parents are welcome to shop with their child after school.

Friday is the end of the 9 weeks.  All grades/missing or make-up work are due before Spring Break.  The children will be taking a spelling test, reading comprehension test and math test.

Stations of the Cross will be at 2:00.

Reading was cool in our sunglasses.

Reading was cozy in our cute slippers and fuzzy socks.

Reading was bright as we enjoyed reading throughout the day with our flashlights and then completing a writing prompt.

Reading was fun sharing with our stuffy.

Hats off to Reading and the amazing book reports.

Key Concepts for the Week:

Religion--We finish Chapter 17 this week and go to Stations of the Cross on Friday.

Language Arts/Grammar--It will be a quick week packed in with lots of skills.  The phonics lessons focus on -r controlled vowels using /er, ir, ur/.  We are going to be learning how to read and create contractions on Tuesday.  The grammar focus this week is helping verbs.  Decodable story homework will be on Wednesday and the comprehension test on Friday.

Handwriting--Spelling word list will be sent home on Monday.  Tuesday we will be using our handwriting book, and the  practice spelling test on Wednesday.  The final spelling test will be on Friday.  The words are tricky as they all make the same sound just spelled differently.  Your child will probably need extra help getting these words mastered.

Math--This week the children will be making a 10 to add two and one digit numbers and add two digit numbers together. Friday we will be taking the end of Chapter Test.

Science--The topic this week is "States of Matter."  We are going to learn about solids, liquids, and gases.  We will have a daily activity in addition to using our science packet.   Thursday the children will be sorting all three states of matter and Friday we will be doing a States of Matter science experiment.
